Blackwork lives on contrast: solid packed black against clean skin, with the shapes kept big and readable. This is work built to be read from across the room, and it holds that read for decades — upper arm, thigh and calf are the classic homes for it, and it wraps a limb beautifully.

Some designs are decoration. "Depths of the Unseen" is a composition, drawn in blackwork — subject first, structure underneath, detail where it pays. It was drawn by Carina, one of the independent artists selling original work through Tattoo Art Customs.

This piece is delivered as clean linework — a ready-to-transfer stencil your artist can ink in straight black, build up in black and grey, or color in a palette of your choosing at the chair. Linework-only pieces are the most flexible thing in the gallery: the drawing is finished, the finish is up to you. And if it is almost right — a name worked in, different flowers, the composition flipped to fit the other arm — order it as a custom variation and an artist will redraw it to your notes.

Tattooing notes: Blackwork

Placement: Shape-driven and flexible: blackwork wraps limbs, mirrors across the sternum and spine, fills gaps between pieces, and is the reliable answer for cover-ups.

Size: Scales from a small bold symbol to a full sleeve. Fine dot texture and thin skin-colored gaps need extra room — black spreads slightly as it ages.

How it ages: The lowest-maintenance style: solid black is forever. Edges soften a little and hairline negative-space detail can narrow over the years.
