A watercolor piece usually keeps a light line skeleton underneath so the washes have somewhere to live as they settle into the skin. Soft edges want flatter, calmer skin — back, thigh or the outer upper arm keep washes and dissolving edges where the artist put them, while high-stretch spots can pull a soft piece out of shape over time.

How it ages: Light washes fade first — watercolor lives or dies on its anchor. Dark values and a linework core underneath keep it readable; sunscreen is essential.
