Placement: Color realism belongs on flat, low-motion skin — upper arm, thigh, calf, chest, back — and out of chronic sun, which shifts colored pigment unevenly.

Size: Gradients need room: five inches and up for most subjects, more for fur, feather and scale textures to read as texture instead of noise.

How it ages: The highest-maintenance major style: light colors fade first and blends soften. Strong dark structure underneath, sunscreen, and touch-ups keep it vivid.
