Blackwork lives on contrast: solid packed black against clean skin, with the shapes kept big and readable. Bold drawing is the most forgiving kind of tattoo: it sits happily on an upper arm, thigh, calf, chest or back, and it scales from a palm-sized piece to a full panel without losing its punch.

Placement: Shape-driven and flexible: blackwork wraps limbs, mirrors across the sternum and spine, fills gaps between pieces, and is the reliable answer for cover-ups.

Size: Scales from a small bold symbol to a full sleeve. Fine dot texture and thin skin-colored gaps need extra room — black spreads slightly as it ages.

How it ages: The lowest-maintenance style: solid black is forever. Edges soften a little and hairline negative-space detail can narrow over the years.
