The color is laid out the way pigment moves in water — blooms, splashes and edges that dissolve instead of stopping at an outline. Soft edges want flatter, calmer skin — back, thigh or the outer upper arm keep washes and dissolving edges where the artist put them, while high-stretch spots can pull a soft piece out of shape over time.

Size: Plan four inches and up so washes can fade out gradually. A solid anchor subject of two to three inches carries the piece as the color softens.

How it ages: Light washes fade first — watercolor lives or dies on its anchor. Dark values and a linework core underneath keep it readable; sunscreen is essential.
